Keeping Your Bedroom Cool as the Weather Gets Warmer

Keeping Your Bedroom Cool as the Weather Gets Warmer

As the summer heat is on the rise, it’s time to get real about your bedroom set-up. Studies show that your body temperature needs to drop slightly before you go to bed, which is why you can’t sleep when you’re too hot. If you have ever feverishly tossed and turned throughout the night, you understand the importance of creating a temperate space to optimize sleep. With our rooms often much warmer than the recommended REM-friendly bedroom temperature, which is between 60 and 67 degrees Fahrenheit, we’ve got some recommendations to keep your bedroom feeling and looking cool this season.

Switch to Linen Sheets

Let’s start with the most important detail: your bed. The longstanding adage “cooler than the other side of the pillow” holds weight here with its relatable rhetoric. After all, there really is nothing quite like slipping into crisp, refreshing sheets after a warm summer day. Creating the bed of your dreams starts with choosing the right sheets. Linen fabric is known for its moisture-wicking and breathable design, making it an optimal material for summer bedding. Try out our Totem sheet set if you’re looking for something cool in both the literal and figurative sense. Handmade in India, these soft white linen pieces include pillowcases, a duvet cover, and both fitted and top sheets. Its delicate, light taupe hand embroidery offers a minimalist, modern design. This super-soft linen wears beautifully with time and keeps a cooler feel throughout the night.

Minimize Light

The greenhouse effect is real, and you might be inadvertently creating it in your bedroom. Closing curtains or blinds during the hottest time of the day will keep the room cooler for sleep — and helps keep your linens from sun-bleaching and fading.

Freeze Your Sheets

Before emptying that tray of ice cubes onto your queen mattress, consider using the freezer in another way. A quick cooling trick for pillowcases or top sheets is popping your fabrics into the freezer. This simple trick adds a delightful boost to your already-cool linen bedding. Use a reusable gallon bag to house your sheets in the freezer for up to an hour. Once you start winding down for the night, crack open the freezer and retrieve a refreshing summer treat — and your pillowcases!

Take Advantage of the Night Air

Save on those hefty electricity bills due to air conditioning and fan operation and instead use the night air to your benefit. While it is important to keep all doors and windows sealed during the hottest parts of the day, evening temperatures can offer plenty of natural cooling. Once the sun goes down, track your local weather until the temperature drops to around 70-75 degrees Fahrenheit. Now it’s time to open as many windows as possible to enjoy some fresh air and a cross breeze. This helps release any sticky heat built up from the day and paves the way to a relaxing sleep.
