handmade braided raffia tote. made in africa of locally-sourced natural fibers.
18" x 12". spot clean only.
behind the design: indego africa partners with artisans in rwanda who make handwoven platters and baskets using raffia: a straw-like fiber that can be stripped from the inside of palm tree leaves. The fibers are found only in a special species of palm tree that grows abundantly across sub-saharan africa. the artisans weave the raffia fibers using a needle and thread, creating a range of shapes, designs, and products that look beautiful in natural raffia tones or when hand-dyed.
each indego africa product is made by hand using traditional techniques. small variations in color & design are part of what makes each piece uniquely beautiful. please handle with care.
indego africa funds educational training programs for the women who handcraft their products. since the beginning of the partnership, 89% of indego africa's artisan partners have risen above the poverty line.
